Ulrich Plieschnig

constructing reality

Opening: Tuesday, January 15th 2013, 7PM
Exhibition: January 16th – February 16th 2013

Plieschnig, who grew up in Carinthia’s Gurktal, regards landscape motifs as a main impulse for his practice. This, however, does not imply that Plieschnig works in an illustrative way – his non-representational paintings emanate from fragmented memories. He explores the nature of painting itself, combines precisely applied opaque and transparent layers of paint with drip marks, which remind the viewer of abstract expressionism and become the subject of his paintings. The artist leads the viewers into unknown territory – the images he creates constitute a reality within themselves.
The traces leading back to our world that Ulrich Plieschnig leaves for the viewer are references to motifs and objects that are defined by the titles of his works. These are spontaneously set literary attributes which accompany the paintings without describing them in any way. Images are autonomous, intrinsic objects, for which interpretation is not necessary. That doesn’t mean, however, that they withdraw from being subjectively engrossed in an art historical context.
